X 4

We have been looking at using our doubles and halves knowledge to multiplying and divide numbers. Did you know that four is the same as 2x2? Well if you double a number (x2) then double again you get the same answer as times 4. If you half a number and half again it is the same as dividing by 4.

Check out our show me to see what we mean.

Review Week

This week we are looking back at the strategies we have practiced this term and applying them in new problems and activities. We will be practicing our basic facts and building our fraction knowledge. Phew, what a busy week we have planned...

Wednesday, 14 September 2011

This week we have been looking at a strategy called rounding and compensating. This involves borrowing extra numbers to make a tidy number, adding the two numbers then adjusting the answer at the end to get the correct answer. See how we use this strategy to solve these problem on our show me videos.

Using Tens Doubles

Look at how Josh uses his doubles when the double is in the tens column.

This week we are using our doubles knowledge

We can find answers to problems like 7+8 by using double 7 and 1 more. We know double 7 is 14 and one more is 15 so 7 + 8 = 15
we know...
Double 2 is 4        Double  3 is 6
 Double 4 is 8         Double 5 is 10
Double 6 is 12       Double 7 is 14
 Double 8 is 16       Double 9 is 18

This makes adding numbers to 20 easy.

Back Through 10

We are continuing to look at the strategy of working back through 10. We also practiced our number bonds to 10 and explored our fraction knowledge.

Check out our show me of going back through 10.

Back through 10's

Tuesday August 23
This week we are using our 10's knowledge to help us with our subtraction problems.

We are using our part whole strategies to move back to the 10 then back the rest required. look at the picture to see how we complete our problems.

Conting on through ten

This week we have been using our 10 bonds to count on. This is a form of part whole thinking where we add some of a number then the rest to make it easier.

Eg 16 + 7 is the same as 16 + 4 + 3 which is 20 + 3 answer 23.

Practice Makes Perfect 10/10

Today we made some dice on our iPads to practice adding numbers between 4-9 and teen numbers. The program we used was called make dice light. Adding an element of competition made some of us forget our strategy.

10's Bonds

This week we have been looking at numbers that make 10 like 5 and 5 or 3 and 7. We are getting really fast at recalling our 10's bonds and started to use this knowledge to answer adding problems like 24 + 7.

Friday August 12th

We have completed our second week of learning and are having fun learning together. We are growing our confidence and skill in math and are getting much faster at the strategies we have been learning. Today we started exploring fractions as well as continuing practicing using 5's to solve addition problems.

We know the bottom number in a fraction tells us how many there are altogether and the top number is the group we are focusing on. eg 3/4 means we are thinking about the 3 out of the four in the group.

Adding using 5's

We have been using our knowledge of 5 to help us add without counting on. Check out our examples of how we use 5's to add up in our head.

Week 2 Using 5's

Today we are looking at using our knowledge of 5 to solve problems.

We can break number up into 5 and ... to help us add. eg

6 + 5 is the same as (5+1) + 5 so we then can see that  5+5 is 10 + 1 more equals 11.

We can solve bigger problems like 35 + 6 by breaking this up into 35 + (5+1) = 41

Friday August 5th

Today we practice using our place value knowledge and then made these cool videos showing how good we have got at saying long numbers.

Wednesday, 3 August 2011

Thursday August 4th

Today we practiced reading our long numbers then played a game with our dice trying to make the biggest number we could. We discovered that you put the biggest number in the thousands house to make a bigger number and order the three dice from biggest to smallest. Look at the photo below of us working together.

Session Two

We have almost mastered saying nine digit numbers. We looked at the rooms in the number houses and saw there were three. The biggest number in a room is 9.

Can you say these numbers?

Number Houses

Today we were looking at the number system and reading long numbers. If you don't know what you are doing itisjustlikereadingwordswithoutspaces. We learn't that numbers are grouped in threes, James called them houses. There is the millions, Thousands and Units houses.

By organising the numbers in houses it makes reading them easier.

Our practice numbers are :

276,654,339

Learning: Helping others, Listening at the right times ignore distractions, Thinking and taking part, Stay focused. Evidence of our work. Kan explain what we are learning about.

Respect: We will care for peoples feeling (no put downs), putting our hands up and taking turns, listening to what others are saying,

Our first Meeting 30-6-11

Today we met to talk about our group and being part of it. We decided we will meet in James' office and we can't decide on a group name. We think 7 eleven, Super 7 and Smart 7 are good options but we will decide next week. Next week we will decide on the name, set out our expectations for each other, make name tags, and get to know each other better.
